Our Favorite Matching Holiday PJs for the Entire Family (2024)

Old Navy offers a vast array of seasonal pajamas at any given time, but the retailer seems to kick it into high gear during the holidays. The 100% cotton Old Navy Graphic Snug-Fit Pajama Set for Kids feels soft and well constructed. And it was clearly the best of the sub-$20 kids PJs we tested.

The company’s holiday-patterns lineup hits all of the festive notes, including menorahs, Christmas trees, and gingerbread men. The kids jammies are available in sizes XS (5) to XL (12). But we learned in our testing that they shrink in the wash, so you may want to size up. Old Navy also sells a limited number of similar sets in the same fabrics for babies and toddlers, though we haven’t tested them.

We also like Old Navy’s Flannel Pajama Set, which comes in a wide range of women’s and men’s sizes (XS to 4X in women’s and XS to XXXXL in men’s). This is the best under-$50 flannel set we tried for our guide to the best pajamas for adults. And this set is available in some of the same patterns as the kids PJs, perfect for that seasonal photo op. (The men’s set comes in fewer patterns, but Old Navy also sells men’s pajama pants on their own in a larger selection of matching seasonal prints.)

We’ve long recommended Hanna Andersson’s high-quality, extra-durable cotton long-johns-style PJs in our guides to pajamas for kids and adults. The kids set and the adult tops and bottoms are available in about 20 cheerful prints that cover all of the holiday bases (think menorahs, skiers, ornaments, and penguins).

But wait, there’s more! This year, my family ventured beyond the cotton long johns into Hanna Andersson’s vast world of holiday jammies. Both of my daughters, ages 5 and 7, loved the recently introduced HannaSoft Holiday Long John Pajama Set, which is made with 94% Tencel Lyocell (a material derived from wood pulp) and 6% spandex. The result is incredibly silky and stretchy, and the PJs come in about 10 festive prints. Just like the cotton Hanna Andersson long johns sets, this HannaSoft set runs big, so you may want to size down for a short or petite kid.

For parents, the Women’s Holiday Long Sleeve Pajama Set in HannaSoft is luxuriously smooth, and the thick fabric drapes elegantly. A cloth drawcord and an elastic band keep the pants in place. And though we have not yet tested these PJs for our adult PJs guide, I personally found that a generous front rise helps them sit comfortably at my waist. High-quality buttons and a chic, feminine collar make the top feel special, too. This set comes in six sizes (XS to XXL) and nine festive patterns, several of which overlap with various kid styles, for those matchy moments.

In her ode to Hanna Andersson’s family jammies,supervising editor Hannah Morrill wrote glowingly of the company’s adult flannel pajama set, which consists of tops and pants sold separately. The unisex set comes in a good assortment of sizes (XXS to XXL), but the sizes are not as wide-ranging as those of the Old Navy flannels. With about 20 holiday prints to choose from, these PJs provide an abundance of opportunities to match or coordinate. The 100% cotton flannel is sturdy and cozy, and the set feels built to last.

(Note that Hanna Andersson’s kids flannel PJs and nightgowns are made with 100% polyester, likely due to children’s sleepwear regulations. They feel well made and remarkably soft, but because polyester isn’t particularly breathable, my kids found them too hot on most nights, and we don’t recommend them.)

You might as well go for holiday gold and get a matching flannel bandana or holiday pajamas for your four-legged family member. (I couldn’t bring myself to dress my Great Pyrenees mix in dog pajamas, but she looked festive—and unperturbed—in her bandana.)

Most of these pairs are made with Petite Plume’s top-quality twill, but there are some seasonal flannel options, too. I’ve owned a flannel nightgown from Petite Plume for four years, and it seems likely to last, with minimal pilling, for many more. The Women’s Twill Pajama Set and Men’s Twill Pajama Set are 100% cotton, with excellent stitching and charming accent piping. The twill and flannel PJs both shrank during our wash tests, so you may want to size up. (Petite Plume also makes several wintery pajama sets and nightgowns with a brushed-cotton fabric; we haven’t tested them.)
